When The Mindless Scrolling Takes Over

Sunny Trochaniak

Hey Can’t Wait Till Monday Nation,

It’s been a… while.

I don’t know if it’s just me, but I’ve found putting out content on a consistent basis to be almost frickin’ impossible these days.

I swear 80% of the emails I’ve sent in the past 2 years have started off with “hey, you probably don’t remember me but…”

It’s not that I don’t enjoy it (quite the opposite). It’s just that it’s so difficult to get into the right frame of mind.

It feels like my attention span has gone off the deep end.

We spend so much of our day consuming, that it’s hard to flip the switch and start creating.

Creating requires a sense of quiet within the mind.

But any time there is a chance to get quiet, our first instinct is to whip out the ol’ Instagram/Facebook/Twitter and start mindlessly scrolling.

It has become completely instinctual.

Like eating a Snickers bar whenever we’re hungry.

(Ok no one actually does that, but you get the point).

If you think about it, there is actually zero intent behind the mindless scrolling.

We are literally just saying “my brain is empty right now… please fill it up with something… please fill it up with anything please.”

And that usually ends up being dramatic news, stupid (but sometimes funny) memes, and life highlights from the friends we haven’t talked to in months.

Most of us would probably choose against consuming those things if we had a conscious choice…

But they’re psychologically addicting. And AI-powered algorithms are working day and night to make them even more-so.

To be honest, it’s not that I have anything against social media.

I actually think it’s changed our world for the better.

But I do resent the mindless scrolling that’s been eating up my space to create.

So far, it’s winning the battle over my self-discipline.

So I’m trying to punch back…

I thought a weekly Monday newsletter would be a good way to get started?

I plan to share:

  • Any braingasms I had that week (with the corresponding picture of my B-face)
  • My thought of the week
  • Commentary on recent business/tech/design news
  • What I’m reading (if I can ever learn to finish a book)
  • Feedback on some of the tech/business tools that I’m using

If you’d like to receive this newsletter, just click here to enter your name and email.

I actually didn’t intend for this post to be a rant about social media… but I’m going to let my brain go wherever it chooses to go.

I do just need one other favour from you though…

Please hold me accountable? If you haven’t heard from me in a couple weeks, send me an email and ask wtf is going on.

Anyways, that’s all for now.

Hope to see you on the newsletter! 🙂
